What Size Canvas for Your Wall? A Room-by-Room Size Guide

By :My Canvases 0 comments
Highland cows canvas hung above a sofa

Most people buy a canvas that's too small. It looks fine in the photo, then lost on the wall. Here's how to get the size right in every room, with the sizes we make.

The two-thirds rule

Above a sofa, bed or sideboard, choose a canvas about two-thirds the width of the furniture. A 200 cm three-seater sofa needs a canvas around 130 cm wide, which is close to our 48×32" (122×81 cm). On an empty wall, aim to cover about half to two-thirds of the wall's width.

Size chart by room

Where Size to look at
Above a three-seater sofa 48×32" or 60×38"
Above a two-seater sofa 36×24" or 48×32"
Above a double or king bed 48×32", or a 48×20" panoramic
Hallway or landing 30×20" or 36×24"
Kitchen or dining room 24×16" to 36×24"
Alcove or chimney breast Square, 20×20" to 30×30"
Long wall or above a TV unit Panoramic 60×24", or a three-panel set up to 90×60"
Bathroom or small bedroom 12×8" to 24×16", or an A3/A4 framed print

Measure before you buy

Cut paper or newspaper to the size you're thinking of and tape it to the wall for a day. If it looks a bit big, it's probably right: art always looks smaller once the room is furnished.

Landscape, portrait, square or panoramic?

Follow the shape of the space. Wide walls and sofas suit landscape and panoramic canvases; narrow walls between windows or doors suit portrait; alcoves and gallery walls suit squares.

One big canvas or several small ones?

One large canvas almost always looks better than several small ones spread out. If you want more than one, hang them as a tight group with 5–8 cm gaps so they read as a single piece, or choose a three-panel set.

Our sizes

Landscape canvases run from 12×8" to 60×38", squares from 12×12" to 38×38", panoramics from 38×16" to 60×24", and three-panel sets up to 90×60". Art prints come in A5 to A1. Everything is made to order in our Birmingham workshop, and if you need an in-between size, ask us.
