How We Make Your Canvas

How We Make Your Canvas

Every My Canvases order is made to order in our workshop at 212 Gooch Street, Birmingham. Here's what happens between you placing an order and the canvas arriving at your door.

1. We check the design and the text

Before a design goes on sale, we check the artwork at the sizes it will be printed. For Arabic and Gurmukhi designs, such as Quranic verses, Bismillah, the Shahada and Ik Onkar, we read and check the text ourselves so the words are right before anything is printed.

2. We prepare the print file

Each size is set up as its own file. We add a mirrored edge around the design: the outer strip of the artwork is reflected onto the sides of the frame, so none of the picture is lost when the canvas is wrapped.

3. We print it in-house

Your canvas is printed on our own Mimaki wide-format printer, onto 100% cotton canvas (280gsm) with high-resolution, fade-resistant inks. Printing in our own workshop means we see every print ourselves rather than relying on an outside print company.

4. We stretch it by hand

The printed canvas is stretched by hand over a kiln-dried pine frame. You choose the depth: Standard 18mm for a slimmer look, or Gallery 38mm (1.5") for a deeper, bolder edge. Larger canvases get cross braces so they stay flat and square. Three-panel sets are made as three separate 38mm canvases. Read more in 18mm vs 38mm: which depth to choose.

5. We finish it and check it

We fit the hanging hardware, finish the back neatly and give every canvas a final check before it's wrapped.

6. We pack it and send it tracked

Canvases are wrapped in several protective layers and sent with tracking. Orders are usually made and dispatched within 2 to 6 working days, and UK deliveries generally arrive 1 to 3 working days after that. UK delivery is free on orders of Β£100 or more. Full details are in our shipping policy.

Questions we're often asked

Where are My Canvases made?

In our own workshop at 212 Gooch Street, Birmingham. Every canvas is printed and stretched there.

Do you check the Arabic and Gurmukhi text?

Yes. We read and check the text of every Arabic and Gurmukhi design ourselves before it goes on sale.

What's the difference between 18mm and 38mm?

It's the depth of the wooden frame. 18mm is slimmer and costs less; 38mm stands further off the wall and gives a more substantial, gallery look.

Can you make a custom size or design?

Yes. We make custom sizes for many designs, and bespoke pieces such as names in Arabic calligraphy or your own photo. Contact us with what you have in mind.

How long will my order take?

Usually 2 to 6 working days to make and dispatch, then 1 to 3 working days for UK delivery.
